No. 2 Houston edges Kent State to stay undefeated

HOUSTON » Marcus Sasser scored 19 points, J’Wan Roberts added 11 points and 14 rebounds, and No. 2 Houston held on to beat Kent State 49-44 on Saturday and give itself an opportunit­y to take over the No. 1 ranking.

Sasser was 8 of 8 from the freethrow line to overcome a 5-of-16 shooting performanc­e, including making just one of 10 3-point attempts. Houston (6-0) shot 32% from the floor and was 2 of 17 on 3s.

The Cougars’ defense carried them, holding the Golden Flashes to 24% shooting, outrebound­ing Kent State 56-33 and getting a 2818 advantage in points in the paint.

VonCameron Davis scored 14 points and Jacobs had 11 points for Kent State (5-2).

(4) TEXAS 91, UT RIO GRANDE VALLEY 54 » Sir’Jabari Rice scored 19 points, Marcus Carr had 18 and Tyrese Hunter 17 to lead Texas (50) over Texas Rio Grande Valley (43). The three guards combined to hit 20 of 36 field goal attempts, including nine 3-pointers.

Texas also received a boost from Dylan Disu, a 6-foot-9 senior who had 10 rebounds, a career-tying five blocks, four assists, three steals and six points.

Justin Johnson led UTRGV with 18 points. Will Johnston scored 10. DELAWARE 78, HARTFORD 50 » Jameer Nelson Jr. had 17 points in Delaware’s win over Hartford.

Nelson (Haverford School) also contribute­d five rebounds, five assists and five steals for the Fightin’ Blue Hens (3-2). L.J. Owens scored 14 points while shooting 5 for 7 (2 for 4 from 3-point range) and 2 of 4 from the free throw line. Gianmarco Arletti finished 4 of 6 from the field to finish with 12 points. Haverford School All-Delco Christian Ray was scoreless but had a team-high nine rebounds.

Kurtis Henderson finished with 13 points and two steals for the Hawks (3-5). Briggs McClain added 13 points.

Women

(2) STANFORD 87, GRAMBLING STATE 50 »

Hannah Jump scored 11 of her 19 points before halftime and Stanford (7-1) eased past Grambling State (1-6) on the second day of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown on Saturday.

The Cardinal never trailed and led the Tigers by as many as 39.

Jump shot 7 of 9 from the field, including 5-of-7 shooting on 3-pointers in just 18 minutes.

Stanford shot 48.5% from the field and 10 of 26 from beyond the arc. Lauren Betts and Elena Bosgana added 11 points apiece for the Cardinal, who grabbed 48 rebounds to Grambling State’s 26.

Colbi Maples scored 13 points and Tiana Gardner 11 for the Tigers, who were held to 32.1% shooting from the field.

(7) NOTRE DAME 85, ARIZONA STATE 65 » Lauren Ebo scored 20 points, Sonia Citron added 15 and Notre Dame (6-0) took control late in the third quarter to beat Arizona State (5-1) in the Goombay Classic.

The game was tied at 43 when Ebo stepped to the foul line with 3:03 to play in the third quarter. Ebo made both shots and the Fighting Irish raced away.

Tyi Skinner scored 15 points and Jaddan Simmons had 14 for the Sun Devils, who suffered their first loss under new coach Natasha Adair.

(12) LSU 99, UAB 64 » Angel Reese had her seventh double-double, two

teammates also had double-doubles and LSU (7-0) cruised past UAB (4-1) for its seventh straight easy win.

Reese had 25 points and 10 rebounds, Flau’jae Johnson 19 and 13, a career-high for the freshman, and Jasmine Carson 12 and 12, her first double-double, for the Tigers, who won the tourney title. Alexis Morris also had 19 points and Sa’Myah Smith 11.

The Tigers handed the Blazers their first loss by shooting 62% with a 33-rebound advantage and scored 60 points in the paint.

(14) MARYLAND 81, TOWSON 70 »

Diamond Miller scored 20 points, Faith Masonius and Shyanne Sellers each added 14 and Maryland (52) beat Towson (3-2).

Miller gave Maryland its first double-digit lead on the first basket of the fourth quarter to make it 59-49.
