Villanova women fall to Baylor in Top 25 battle

Caitlin Bickle scored the last five points of the game, finishing with 18 to go with 12 rebounds, as No. 21 Baylor held off No. 23 Villanova 75-70 in the Gulf Coast Showcase semifinals Saturday.

After Villanova’s Lucy Olsen tied the game at 70 with two minutes to go, the teams combined for five misses and three offensive rebounds before Bickle was fouled with 47.5 seconds to play. She made both free throws and, on the Wildcats’ next possession, they missed three more shots before Bickle corralled a rebound with 10.1 seconds to play and made two more free throws.

Villanova had two more missed shots before Bickle wrapped it up with a board and a free throw.

The Wildcats missed their last seven shots in the final 1:17.

Both teams had an eight-point lead and a run of seven in a game that was tied 10 times and had five lead changes.

Maddy Siegrist scored 22 points, 10 in the fourth quarter, for the Wildcats but was just 8 of 24 from the field and missed all six of her 3s. Siegrist was averaging 27.8 points on 52 percent shooting, 40 percent from 3-point range. Olsen added 18 points.

Baylor (5-1) will play the winner of No. 22 Michigan and South Florida for the title. Villanova (51), which faces the late-game loser for third Sunday at 5 p.m., ended up 4-for-22 from 3-point range.

Jaden Owen had a career-high 17 points for Baylor. Sarah Andrews had 13 points, and Ja’Mee Asberry and Bella Fontleroy both added 11.

Men’s Basketball

Josh Nickelberr­y scored 17 points in La Salle’s 65-62 win over Binghamton Saturday.

Nickelberr­y was 4-of-14 shooting, including 3-for-10 from distance, and went 6-for-8 from the line for the Explorers (3-3). Khalil Brantley scored 15 points and Hassan Drame had 13 points, with five rebounds and four steals. He made a go-ahead jumper with 1:18 remaining to give La Salle a 62-61 lead.

Jacob Falko finished with 20 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals for the Bearcats (33). Tariq Balogun added 16 points for Binghamton.

PENN 81, COLGATE 69 » Clark Slajchert’s 33 points led Penn to a win. Slajchert had three steals for the Quakers (4-4).

Jordan Dingle shot 10 for 16 (3 for 7 from 3-point range) and 3 of 4 from the free throw line to add 26 points. Max Martz shot 4 for 9, including 3 for 6 from beyond the arc to finish with 12 points.

Keegan Records led the way for the Raiders (4-4) with 17 points. Chandler Baker added 14 points for Colgate.

Ejay Morris scored 15 points to go with seven rebounds, but the Eagles fell in a game that was tied 11 times and featured four lead changes.

Jaron Fairweathe­r scored 13 points, Sam Gallardo chipped in 12 and Zubair Lee was a presence in the lane with 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocks for the Eagles (6-1), who suffered their first loss of the season at the Holiday Inn CNU Tournament.
