Days Gone By

- — COLIN AINSWORTH

100 Years Ago, 1922: The Dominion Miller, a cargo carrier, owned and operated by English interests and now loading grain at Pier No. 27, North Philadelphia, offers a practical illustration of results obtained by the Sun-Doxford Diesel double opposed piston motor oil engine. The action of this ship has been watched with a scrutinizing eye, especially by the management of the Sun Shipbuilding Company, which many months ago acquired the rights to manufacture this engine under English patent papers.

75 Years Ago, 1947: In an effort to speed the movement of downtown traffic and eliminate one of the bottlenecks, Chester police today made Sixth Street a one-way artery between Welsh Street and Edgmont Avenue Traffic will move west on the street, it was announced by Capt. Joseph Denmark, head of the police traffic division. This will eliminate left-turns into Sixth Street from Edgmont Avenue. The one-way system was ordered by Mayor Ralph F. Swarts, and will be tried out for 10 days. It proves better than the old two-way system, it will be made permanent, the captain said.

50 Years Ago, 1972: Mrs. Lynda Mayer will speak at Widener College at 2 p.m. Dec. 11 on the merits of the Home Rule Charter and other forms of government in Pennsylvania. Mrs. Mayer’s address will be in Lecture Hall No. 1 of the Kapelski Learning Center. Mrs. Mayer of Radnor is vice chairman of home rule of the League of Women Voters of Delaware County.

25 Years Ago, 1997: Sunday night’s school bus vandalism at Garnet Valley High School indicates a growing “”sickness” in society and defies quick solutions, senior Max Woodfin said in a telephone interview yesterday. “”How could someone think of destruction that costs that much money?” asked Max, who is a member of the National Honor Society and student representative to the school board. “”We don’t have the finances to protect the buses from that kind of thing. The roots of this lie deeper than something that could be handled immediately by legislation. There are a lot of lost kids out there. It’s something deeply embedded in our culture.”

10 Years Ago, 2012: Haverford Township zoners are slated to render a decision at the Thursday meeting on a request for a special exception to open a Rita’s Italian ices franchise at 500 West Chester Pike, at the corner of Steel Road. The nearly 1,200-square-foot property at 500 West Chester Pike is vacant, but formerly housed a Mobile Gas Station and used car dealership. However, C-3 Commercial zoning does not permit fast food/takeout restaurants as a use by right.
