Brugler, Nystrom boost St. Joe’s from charity stripe

A pair of free throws by Tayla Brugler followed by two from Julia Nystrom helped Saint Joseph’s remain undefeated with a 65-61 victory over Boston University at Hagan Arena in women’s college basketball action Thursday night.

Brugler’s foul shots with 35 seconds left broke a 61-61 deadlock. Nystrom sealed the victory with two free throws with one second remaining.

Brugler paced the Hawks (7-0) with 23 points. Katie Jekot added 13 points and Olivia Mullins 11.

PENN 73, STONY BROOK 53 » A fast start helped the Quakers (3-5) earn their second straight win.

The Quakers (3-5) went on a 15-0 run to open up a 17-2 advantage and never looked back. Mandy McGurk (Notre Dame All-Delco) paced a balanced attack with 18 points. She also grabbed five rebounds, made three steals and handed out two assists.

Jordan Obi pitched in with 16 points and five boards. Simone Sawyer added 12 points and Floor Toonders posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

HAVERFORD 65, URSINUS 55 » Abby Ryan and Ally Landau came up big off the bench for the Fords. Ryan tallied a team-high 14 points, while Landau contribute­d 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Gia Flamini pitched in with 12 points. Cortlyn Morris registered a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds and Kayla Robinson also scored 11 points.

MUHLENBERG 60, SWARTHMORE 57 » The Mules hit four free throws in the final 1:25 to spoil the Garnet’s comeback bid.

Alyssa Hayashi and Norah Wingfield tallied 16 points apiece for Swarthmore. Wingfield also had seven rebounds. Carolina Lopez added 12 points for Swarthmore (4-3, 2-1).

Men’s Basketball

A big game from Diandre Green wasn’t enough to get Delaware County Community College back on the winning track.

Green poured in a game-high 32 points but it wasn’t enough as the Phantoms suffered their fourth straight loss in an 82-77 setback to Harrisburg Area Community College.

Vincent Boykin and Vasean White pitched in with 11 points each while Maurie Alexander collected eight points, 14 rebounds and four steals for DCCC (1-5).
