Shaky Temple blows lead, falls to Maryland Eastern Shore

It all went south for Temple in the second half.

Maryland Eastern Shore scored 13 points off 11 Temple turnovers and held the Owls to 15 percent shooting from 3-point range to rally for an 86-78 victory Tuesday night.

UMES (4-7) went on an 11-0 run in the second half to turn a 54-51 deficit into a 62-54 advantage. The Hawks extended that lead to 7762. Phillip Da’Sha led the Hawks with 18 points. Nathanial Pollard Jr. pitched in with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Khalif Battle and Zach Hicks paced the Owls (6-7) with 15 points each. Battle also had eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. Nick Jourdain (11), Hysier Miller (11) and Damian Dunn (10) also reached double figures for Temple.

Women’s Basketball

It didn’t take long for Saint Joseph’s to shake off the rust from a 10-day layoff following its first loss of the season.

The Hawks quickly erased an early four-point deficit and pulled away for a 70-62 victory over Wright State in the opening round of the 27th annual Hawk Classic.

SJU (10-1) will take on James Madison, a 78-43 winner over Eastern Michigan, in Wednesday’s championsh­ip game.

Tayla Brugler tallied a careerhigh 27 points, pulled down seven rebounds and three assists. Mackenzie Smith added 21 points and six boards. Avalynn Beer paced Widener (4-9) with 18 points and seven rebounds. Jordan D’Ambrosio (Springfiel­d) contribute­d 17 points, four rebounds and three assists. Lindsay Kutz chipped in with 13 points and nine boards.
