-

BOSTON » Rafael Devers has agreed to an 11year extension worth $331 million with the Boston Red Sox, a person with knowledge of the agreement told The Associated Press Wednesday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the deal.

Locking up Devers, a two-time All-Star third baseman, was an important move for the Red Sox and their uneasy fans after AllStar shortstop Xander Bogaerts, slugger J.D. Martinez and pitcher Nathan Eovaldi departed in free agency.

The team and the 26-year-old Devers reached the new deal a day after he agreed to a one-year, $17.5 million contract to avoid arbitration in his final year under team control.

Devers’ extension is the longest-term commitment this offseason by the Red Sox and Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom, supplanting the five-year, $90 million deal signed by Japanese star Masataka Yoshida.

Devers was the AL’s starting All-Star third baseman each of the past two years. In 141 games last season, he batted .295 with 42

doubles, 27 home runs and 88 RBIs.

CHICAGO » Eric Hosmer agreed to a $720,000, one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs, giving the team another option at first base and designated hitter.

A person familiar with the negotiations confirmed the deal to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because it was pending a successful physical.

Hosmer’s contract is for the major league minimum while the Padres are on the hook for the last part of a $144 million, eight-year deal that was finalized in February 2018.

The addition of Hosmer gives Chicago an experienced first baseman who also could contribute at DH if rookie Matt Mervis plays his way into a regular role.

Hosmer, 33, played for San Diego and Boston last season, batting .268 with eight homers and 44 RBIs in 104 games. He was traded to Boston in August, and was designated for assignment by the Red Sox last month.

Hosmer is a .277 hitter with 196 homers and 879 RBIs in 1,658 career games. He hit a career-best 25 homers in 2016 and 2017, and

he set a career high with 104 RBIs in 2017.

MILWAUKEE » The Milwaukee Brewers and veteran left-hander Wade Miley agreed to a $4.5 million, one-year contract, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Miley can make additional $1.5 million in incentives, and there is a $10 million mutual option for 2024.

Milwaukee also acquired right-hander Bryse Wilson from the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash earlier Wednesday.

Miley, 36, went 2-2 with a 3.16 ERA in nine appearances with the Chicago Cubs last season. He missed the start of the season with elbow inflammation, and he also was sidelined by a strained throwing shoulder.

He was claimed off waivers from Cincinnati after he went 12-7 with a 3.37 ERA in 28 starts for the Reds during the 2021 season, including his first career no-hitter.

Miley owns a career record of 99-94 with a 4.13 ERA in 292 appearances, including 285 starts.

The Brewers acquired Wilson a week after the Pirates designated him for assignment.

Wilson, 25, went 3-9 with a 5.52 ERA in 25 appearances last season, including 20 starts.

Smith says Nationals to make him regular at first base

WASHINGTON » Dominic Smith described his move to the Washington Nationals via a oneyear, $2 million contract as a “fresh start” and said the team that finished last in the NL East each of the past three seasons wants him to be its everyday first baseman.

“They want me to come in and play first base and just share my knowledge of the game,” Smith said during a video conference with reporters.

In addition to the $2 million salary, his free-agent contract includes up to $2 million in possible incentives, according to a person with knowledge of the deal, who confirmed the parameters on condition of anonymity.

During his time with the Mets, the affable Smith split time between first base, left field and designated hitter. He thinks sticking mainly to first, where he was blocked by Mets slugger Pete Alonso, will allow him “to just really be comfortable,” he said.
