Birds’ rookie Brown hampered by hamstring issue

Eagles rookie defensive back Sydney Brown was held out of practice Wednesday with a hamstring issue. Also idle were safety Justin Evans (neck) and wide receiver Quez Watkins (hamstring).

Brown played a dozen snaps in the 25-11 win over the Buccaneers Monday. His diving pass breakup in the end zone on Baker Mayfield’s pinpoint throw to hulking 6-5, 231-pound receiver Mike Evans may well have been the turning point in the game, since the Eagles led by just a field goal at that point.

“It shows you a little bit who Sydney is, that he’s not overwhelmed by the moment, not overwhelmed by the opponent, knowing the moment was big and so was the opponent,” head coach Nick Sirianni said Wednesday. “He just stuck to who he is and he’s confident in himself. We’re confident in him. It was a heck of a play that saved us.”

Limited at Eagles practice were punt returner-wide receiver Britain Covey (hamstring), defensive tackle Fletcher Cox (knee), linebacker Zach Cunningham (ribs) and guard Cam Jurgens (groin). Sirianni doesn’t sound concerned about Jurgens, who has wowed the coaching staff in place of underrated guard Isaac Seumalo, who exited in free agency.

“Three good games in a row,” Sirianni said of Jurgens. “(We) just want to continue with that. He’s fit in nicely. He’s in between two pretty good players. That helps that transition.”

The good news for the Eagles was guard Landon Dickerson (knee) and running back/ kickoff returner Boston Scott (concussion) practiced fully.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts says he’s “alright” after being smacked with flu-like symptoms Monday night in Tampa.

For the Commanders (2-1), safety Percy Butler (foot), running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. (illness) and tight end Logan Thomas (concussion) were limited at practice Wednesday.

Cornerbacks Benjamin St-Juste (neck) and Emmanuel Forbes Jr. (elbow) were full participants.

The Commanders were crushed, 37-3, by the Bills and quarterback Josh Allen, who threw for a touchdown and rushed for one. Washington quarterback Sam Howell was sacked nine times and threw four interceptions.

The Commanders didn’t score until Joey Slye kicked a 51-yard field goal with 46 seconds left.
