Viau, Bruce give Penncrest a push past Marple

Sheldon Viau and Alex Bruce’s 3-point shooting jumpstarte­d a fourth-quarter surge by Penncrest en route to the Lions’ 56-40 Central League victory over Marple Newtown.

Bruce, Kathryn Harding and Emily Huggins all scored 12 points as the Lions closed the game on a 14-4 run. Bailey Garrison tallied 11 points in the winning cause. Olivia Gicking paced the Tigers with 11 points.

In other Central League action:

Kate Gallagher’s 12-point effort helped the Raptors down the Cougars. Blayse Jenning finished with 11 points and Nyah Yao added 10. Cora Fattori scored 12 points for the Cougars.

Kayla Carney (17) and Kailyn Bell (16) combined for 33 points to lead the Green Raiders past the Royals. Cameron Ross netted a teamhigh 10 points for UD.

Emily Olsen totaled 13 points and Kylie Mulholland ended with 11, but it wasn’t enough for the Jaguars. Ryann Jennings led all players with 24 points for the Pioneers.

In the Ches-Mont League:

Brielle Wright had nine points for the Vanguards.

In nonleague action:

Mariah Wright had 10 of her 15 points in the second half to help the Patriots beat the host Pandas. Laila Johnson tossed in 11 points for Penn Wood. Riley Donahue produced a game-high 23 points for the Pandas.

Alaysia Kinlaw paced the Knights with 10 points in the losing cause. AP and the Golden Knights were tied up through three quarters, but last season’s District 1 Class 5A champions closed the game on a 17-10 run.

Boys Swimming

Jacob Muntz led a 1-2 Haverford finish in the 200 freestyle and also won the 100 butterfly as the Fords topped Strath Haven, 102-79, on Thursday.

Muntz also led off the winning 200 free relay. TJ Hayes prevailed in the 50 free and 100 backstroke. Ethan Wojnovich won the 100 free. Jack Scholtz and Jeremy Sheau went 1-2 in diving for the Fords.

Strath Haven’s Gavin Shifflett won the 200 individual medley and the 500 free.

Also in the Central League:

Kaden Bothma won the 200 free and 100 breaststro­ke to lead the Tigers to a win.

Pat Droesser started the back half of the meet by winning the 100 fly. Rudi Witzel won the 500, and Sean Eynard prevailed in the 100 back. Dayton Fasbinder was the top scorer in diving.

Despite the loss, Penncrest’s Jonathan Hoole set a pool record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.03. He also won the 100 free, and teammate Elliot Day won the 50 free.

Jacob Johnson went 21.00 seconds in the 50 free to outduel fellow blue-chipper Jake Wang by .02, but the Pioneers simply had too much depth for the Cougars in a battle of Central League powers.

Wang bested Jake Kennedy in the 100 free, a time of 46.92 to Kennedy’s 47.36.

The Cougars won all three relays. Tristan Ronayne, Alex Chan, Johnson and Kennedy went 1:35.14 in the 200 medley, 1:25.91 in the 200 free and 3:14.62 in the 400 free, the former two against loaded Conestoga squads.

In nonleague action:

Zairus Stapleton won the 100 freestyle and swam a leg on the Eagles’ winning 200 free relay, but it wasn’t quite enough.

Erik Strifler won the 200 free and 100 free to lead the Vanguards. Luke Habich won the 200 IM and 500 free.

Interboro’s Kylie Arnott scored 243.55 points to win boys diving. Jimmy Toland won the 100 breast for the Bucs.

Girls Swimming

Morgan Peterson and Kaitlyn Neidich combined to sweep the freestyle events as Penncrest bested Marple Newtown, 127-57, in the Central League.

Neidich won the 200 and 500 free. Peterson was quickest in the 50 and 100. She also swam breaststro­ke on Penncrest’s winning 200 medley relay. She led off and Neidich anchored the 200 free relay, and Neidich brought home the concluding 400 free foursome.

Marple got the win in diving thanks to Delaney Behl, who scored 206.20 points.

Freshmen Porter Shaw (100 fly) and Devon Fix (100 back) picked up wins to pace the Fords.

Ellie Krissinger and Abby Lint went 1-2 in the 200 free to start off the meet. Winnie Hayes added a 200 IM win. Amelia Marotta was the high-scoring diver.

Mira Gold swept the springs for Haven.

Ayva Christie prevailed in the 200 IM in a time of 2:16.42, but the Cougars fell to the reigning Central League champs.

In nonleague action:

Interboro showed its distance depth, with Marin Daniels winning the 200 free and Alexis Mireider the 500 free. Aubrey Kauffman scored 182.90 to win diving.

Kara Damico went 1:14.54 to qualify for the District 1 championsh­ips and break an 18-year-old school record for the Vanguards. Damico also won the 50 free. Angela Taylor won the 200 IM and 100 fly, and Lucy McClellan won the 100 back and 100 free.

Kendal Willauer won the 100 breast late in the meet for the Eagles. Julia Pfleger’s score of 182.50 was tops in diving.
