100 YEARS AGO, 1924 » Resuming an active attack upon the hearts and pocketbook­s of the citizens of the city, the campaign workers in the American Legion $50,000 memorial home drive, took advantage of the fine weather conditions this morning to interview hundreds of men and women. The report of their success will be made known at a noonday luncheon meeting Monday in the Masonic Temple grill room.

75 YEARS AGO, 1949 » Friends and boosters of Danny Murtaugh jammed the Franklin Firehouse Tuesday evening to honor the Chester-born Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman. Among the guests were Mickey Vernon, first baseman for the Cleveland Indians and Bill McCahan, A’s hurler. Jack Thomas, chairman of the committee in charge of the affair, presented the guest of honor with a mantle clock on behalf of Murtaugh’s fans in Chester. A highlight of the evening was the announceme­nt by Thomas that Danny had become the father of a baby girl early Tuesday morning.

50 YEARS AGO, 1974 » Is there an abovenorma­l amount of gasoline stored at Sun Oil Company’s refinery in Marcus Hook during the height of the weekend gasoline shortage. Refinery spokesman Hank Page says no, even though he admits there are 42 million gallons on the latest refinery inventory. He claims this is normal for this time of year as refineries build inventorie­s against increased summer usage. A source told the Times similar large inventorie­s existed at other oil refineries along the Delaware River. He blamed the problem on the allocation system set up by the Federal Energy Office. He said the companies are subject to fines if they send out more gasoline than is allocated by FEO to any state.

25 YEARS AGO, 1999 » By July 7, Newtown

Township will have a brand new road, linking Rt. 252 to West Chester Pike across a 22-acre portion of SAP America, Inc. property — or the contractor will have a $3,000 penalty to pay for each day thereafter that the road is not completed. Township management consultant David Dunn announced at last night’s supervisor­s meeting that constructi­on of the 0.3 mile, three-lane Winding Way Bypass will begin March 8 and be completed in four months.

10 YEARS AGO, 2014 » The Aston Sports Hall of Fame will celebrate its 15th birthday next month. The hall’s annual awards dinner will take place Thursday, March 20, at the King’s Mill Banquet Hall. This will be the first dinner since the passing of William ‘Butch’ Ryan, one of the associatio­n’s founders, who died last August.
