Nola struggles, Suarez sharp in split-squad split

-

Aaron Nola struggled on the mound, and Scott Kingery hit his second home run of the spring as a Phillies split squad tied the Marlins Friday, 6-6, in Clearwater.

The other half of the team fell to the Tigers, 4-2, in Lakeland despite a strong outing from Ranger Suarez.

Nola gave up seven hits and four earned runs in three innings against the Marlins. He walked none and didn’t record a strikeout. He also hit a batter.

Otherwise, the Phillies pitchers looked good against Miami. Spencer Turnbull struck out four in two innings of work. Griff McGarry struck out the side in the sixth. Dylan Covey was the exception, walking two and hitting a batter. He was tagged with two earned runs allowed.

Kingery hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, his second of the spring. He scored on Cam Gallagher’s two-run bomb in the eighth. Kingery’s homer scored David Dahl, who hit his second homer of the spring in the ninth to tie the game. Simon Muzziotti scored Gallagher with a single in the sixth.

In Lakeland, Suarez allowed one hit, walked none and struck out two in three shutout innings. He was followed by two shutout frames from Luis Ortiz.

Things got dodgy in the sixth when Ryan Burr surrendered a pair of home runs and three earned runs.

Nine Phillies had hits, including Johan Rojas out of the leadoff spot. Bryson Stott, Kody Clemens and Aramis Garcia all doubled. Nick Podkul drove in a run in the second inning, and Carlos De La Cruz plated a run in the ninth.
