RIDLEY TOWNSHIP » Ridley High School, in partnership with Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union, hosted Financial Reality Fair at the school in Folsom.

The fair provided students with a hands-on experience, aimed at enhancing financial literacy and preparing them for the financial challenges of adulthood.

The fair welcomed 11thgrade students to participate in interactive simulations and real-world scenarios designed to display the complexities of personal finance.

Students assumed fictional personas with corresponding careers, incomes, and family situations, and navigated through 15 different stations representing common expenses such as housing, transportation, utilities, groceries and health care. Throughout the fair, students made decisions about budgeting, and saving and spending, gaining valuable insights into the importance of financial planning and responsibility.

Volunteers from local financial institutions provided guidance and support, offering practical advice and sharing their expertise to help students make informed choices.

“The Financial Reality Fair gives the students a brief look into their financial future,” said Patricia McAllister, youth financial education manager at Franklin Mint. “Not only do they see the costs of various every day needs and wants, they are asked to make important decisions based on

what they value most. Our FMFCU team loves having the opportunity to connect with the students and to help them understand the value of money management. For those of us who are parents, we also enjoy hearing them express how much more they appreciate their own parents once they have tried to balance a budget.”

According to a press release from Ridley High School, “The Financial Reality Fair received positive feedback from students, educators and volunteers alike. Participants praised the event for its relevance and effectiveness in promoting financial literacy and empowerment among students. The success of the fair underscores Ridley High School’s dedication to providing comprehensive education that prepares students for the challenges of adulthood.”

Zakariya Boujida, student at Ridley High School, said, “I didn’t think budgeting and paying for kids was this hard, but this taught me a lot and I will definitely be using this for the

future.”

COSA offers free A Matter of Balance program to older adults

The Delaware Office of Services for the Aging (COSA) will offer the A Matter of Balance program free to adults age 60 and older.

The program will be held in collaboration with the Upper Chichester Township Parks and Recreation.

It will be held Mondays from April 15 through June 30 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Upper Chicheser Field House, 8500 Furey Road, in the Caucus Room.

The eight-session program is proven to help reduce the risk of falls among older adults. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention findings indicate that every 20 minutes an older adult in the U.S. dies from a fall. The CDC says that falls are also the most common cause of traumatic brain injury.

Many people do not know that fear of falling can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, putting us at an increased risk for falls. The good news is that older adults can learn what they can do to increase their physical strength, flexibility and balance and decrease their risk of falling, while participating in A Matter of Balance.

Register by contacting Ellen Williams, health and wellness program manager, at williamse@co.delaware.pa.us or by calling 610-872-1383. Space is limited.
