Delaware County to present spring career fair in Morton

MORTON » Delaware County will host its first career fair of 2024 on Thursday, April 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Delaware County Intermedia­te Unit, 200 Yale Ave., Morton.

The fair is more than just a hiring event, it’s an opportunit­y for Delaware County residents to explore potential careers that offer fulfillmen­t and the chance to contribute meaningful­ly to the community.

Attendees will have an opportunit­y to meet the county Recruitmen­t Team to discuss open positions and gain a better understand­ing of the job duties and the benefits offered, and have the team review their resumes and skills to help determine the best fit for available positions.

A wide range of Delaware County department­s will be participat­ing, actively seeking dedicated individual­s for various full-time positions.

Department­s include the Delaware County Health Department, the Department of Human Services, Facilities Management, Informatio­n Technology (IT), the George W. Hill Correction­al Facility, Fair Acres Geriatric Center, the Delaware County Park Police, the Department of Emergency Services, Human Resources, the County Office of Services for the Aging (COSA), and the Treasurer’s Office.

Additional­ly, the County’s Bureau of Elections will be on-site, seeking temporary workers for the upcoming Primary Election on April 23.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their resumes and be prepared for the possibilit­y of on-the-spot interviews. This is a unique chance to make a personal connection with a recruitmen­t team and learn about available positions and careers. Job seekers can receive immediate feedback on how their skills and experience­s align with the County’s needs.

Whether someone is a seasoned profession­al or entering the workforce, the county has opportunit­ies that cater to a broad spectrum of skills and interests, with full-time positions including: social workers, case workers and managers, plumber, custodian, maintenanc­e technician, recruiter, paralegal, senior administra­tive specialist, network specialist, database administra­tor, helpdesk technician, RNs and LPNs (full time, part time and per diem), nursing supervisor­s, unit managers, CNAs (full time), food service workers, dietitians, laundry workers, correction­al officers, labor relations generalist, poll workers and more.

Jones Scholarshi­p banquet to celebrate local leaders and students

Three hundred and fifty community members will celebrate the legacies of Isiah A. Jones Sr. and Tommie Lee Jones on Saturday, March 23.

These venerated citizens devoted their lives to their neighbors.

Throughout the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s Tommie Lee and Ike Sr. mentored young people, provided food and other necessitie­s to their neighbors, advocated for government­al reform, and supported runaways and foster youth. Many of the young people that they mentored have gone on to become engaged and active citizens that are paying it forward to the next generation of young people.

The event will honor those who are carrying on Ike Sr. and Tommie Lee’s legacies, including La’Ron Burton, Overcoming Obstacles Award; Khanai Campbell, Overcoming Obstacles Award; Emein Smith, Overcoming Obstacles Award; Denise Loper Johnson, Educator of the Year; Patricia Demiranda, Tommie Lee Jones and Ike Jones Sr. Legacy Award; Nasir Jihad, Tommie Lee Jones and Ike Jones Sr. Legacy Award; Twyla Simpkins, Tommie Lee Jones and Ike Jones Sr. Legacy Award; Jean-Pierre Brice, Community Leadership Award; Jonathan Abdur Rahim King, Community Leadership Award; Cory Long, Community Leadership Award; Rosetta Carter, The Lifetime Achievemen­t Award.

Isiah Jones Jr., founder of the Jones Scholarshi­p Fund, shares this message, “For decades, people in Chester have been telling me about all the good that my parents did in their lives. They helped people get jobs; they helped people get into college; they helped people turn their lives around. Now, many of the young people who were part of the Black Youth Society and Youth in Action are community leaders themselves. We are seeing a ripple effect throughout the generation­s.”

The event will also honor and award scholarshi­ps to 13 Chester-Upland School District seniors to help defray the cost of their undergradu­ate education.

The 2024 Jones Scholarshi­p awardees are: NaQuan Thomas, Jhonatan Caivinagua, Sharlene Richardson, Kaitlynn Barner, Alisa Dennis, Kapri Johnson, Elijah Williams, Emani Williams, A’lasia Mosley, Jade Abdullah, Za’Niyah Wesley, Naveah Lockett and Brianni Mitchell.

The Jones Scholarshi­p Fund is a program of The Community’s Foundation. TCF, based in Ridley Park, connects volunteers and donors to support grants, programs, and scholarshi­ps that change lives in Delco.

Women can receive free clothing, bras, more at Open Wardrobe Smart & Sexy Day

Women can receive free bras along with profession­al or casual clothing for “maximum uplift” as part of National Smart & Sexy Day.

On Thursday, March 28, The Wardrobe will host Open Wardrobe education and clothing events for women in Philadelph­ia, Upper Darby, Chester, Exton and Kennett Square, sponsored by National Smart & Sexy Day and The Alliance of Career Developmen­t Nonprofits (ACDN) in honor of Women’s History Month.

The Wardrobe locations are 413 N. Fourth St., Philadelph­ia; 62 W. Marshall Road, Upper Darby; 345 Scarlet Road, Kennett Square; and 153 Exton Square Parkway in the Exton Square Mall in Exton. They are open Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m.to 6 p.m. for shopping and client appointmen­ts. Women are welcome to attend any of the four locations to receive a free bra fitting, a Smart & Sexy bra, and free profession­al or casual clothing. Guests can attend a Suit Up for your interview presentati­on at all locations at 10 a.m. and shopping will be open.

Smart & Sexy Day events aim to inspire women, boosting their self-confidence so that they feel assured, confident, and, most of all, employable. Media-UP Free Library accepting donations for spring book sale

Media-Upper Providence Free Library is currently looking for donations for its Spring Book Sale scheduled for April 13 to 15.

Donate your no-longerneed­ed books, puzzles, games, CDs and DVDs. Donation bins are available 24/7 near the library’s main entrance on North Jackson Street in Media. Donations will be accepted through March 31.

Donations cannot be accepted in April, during the month of the sale and the library will not accept encycloped­ias or National Geographic magazines.

Colwyn receives $425K to improve infrastruc­ture

State Rep. Regina Young presented a check for $425,000 last week to Colwyn for Walnut Street sanitary sewer improvemen­ts.

The funds were awarded by the Commonweal­th Financing Authority’s American Rescue Plan Act PA Small Water and Sewer Program, a division of the Department of Community and Economic Developmen­t.

This grant was part of over $800,000 recently awarded to Delaware County municipali­ties in the 185th legislativ­e district through the ARPA H2O PA and PA Small Water and Sewer programs.

Funds distribute­d through the Small Water and Sewer program provide for small water, sewer and storm system water infrastruc­ture projects. Act 54 of 2022 appropriat­ed $105.6 million of American Rescue Plan Act funds to the PA Small Water and Sewer Program.

The Goat continued the celebratio­n Saturday and will bump up the party today for St. Patrick’s Day, with a full Irish menu and music, bagpipers and Irish dancing, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
