100 YEARS AGO, 1924 » The celebrated “Hot Foot Gang” of the Fifth Ward, this city, for a long time a source of menace to the people living in that ward, was again represented in Court. Judge Bouton paroled three young men, all of whom pleaded guilty to assault and battery of Walter Wiley, a restaurant proprietor of at 719 Morton Ave. Judge Bouton advised the trio to behave in the future.
75 YEARS AGO, 1949 » “Let the picture tell the story.” With this theme, pictures are playing a more prominent part in the pages of the Chester Times. A revolutionary new electric engraving machine has been installed which produces newspaper cuts on plastic in a matter of minutes. The acquisition of the Fairchild engraving machine coincided with the installation of the latest Acme telephoto trans-ceiver linking the Times photographically with major cities of the world. Miss Doris Korba, a CHS graduate class of ’48, has been chosen to operate the Fairchild machine and to assist in the photo lab. She was the first girl to operate the machine in the United States.
50 YEARS AGO, 1974 » Chester City Council tentatively approved an ordinance Wednesday to float a $5-million bond issue to help finance a $9-million-plus, six-year capital improvement plan. The measure is expected to be adopted at a special council meeting at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The major non-urban renewal projects to be funded include sewer projects and improvements, expenditures for major items of equipment and machinery for the Department of Streets and Public Improvements and new construction and general improving of city parks.
25 YEARS AGO, 1999 » Lansdowne police say a pure form of heroin — the most potent they’ve ever seen — is responsible for four deaths in the area in the last three weeks. Murphy warned that this batch of heroin is more potent than anything he’s seen in a long time. “”Heroin was a drug of the 1960s,” Murphy said. “”The stuff we’re seeing is a lot stronger than it used to be.”
10 YEARS AGO, 2014 » With the unveiling of a summer outdoor concert series schedule at the Sun Center Studios featuring some well-known names, the studio head said visitors will have the chance to be among the astral and the Hollywood stars. Haddonfield, N.J.-based BRE Presents announced it would be producing the 10-event Starlight Summer Concert Series in conjunction with Sun Center Studios. Starting June 11 and running through Aug. 13, the series will feature artists including Buddy Guy, the Bacon Brothers, the Indigo Girls and the Beach Boys.
