Darrel Walter Lawrence

-

Darrel Walter Lawrence, 80, of Atlantic Beach, N.C., owner of The Caribbe Inn Motel, passed away while on vacation in Miami, Fla., on Feb. 7, 2024.

Darrel was a wonderful husband and a kind, loving, and wise father and grandfather. Everyone who knew him will miss his sweet smile and the love he gave so generously.

Born Oct. 9, 1943, Darrel was one of six children of Walter and Dorothy Lawrence of Delaware County, PA. Darrel grew up in Lester, Pa., where he attended Lester Elementary School, Ridley Park High School, and later West Chester University where he graduated with a degree in education. Darrel went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Physical Education from Ball State University. He put his degrees to good use teaching health and physical education for 36 years in Wilmington, Del., motivating and inspiring children to be physically active.

Darrel was a natural athlete. He did well in many sports— baseball, basketball, swimming, and bowling — but he excelled in track and field. He received many metals for pole vaulting during high school and college and even held the pole vaulting record in Pa. for several years.

Darrel met his longtime love and wife of 49 years Patricia Lawrence (Hughes) in 1972. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 22, 2024.

For six years after they married, Darrel and Trish owned and operated The Avon Green Inn in Avondale, Pa., which they eventually remodeled and renamed, Beef About Our Brew. In 1980, they sold the restaurant to focus on raising their two sons, Michael and Patrick, in Wilmington, Del., where they both taught school and Darrel operated a small construction business.

Darrel worked hard to support and care for his family, after school, on Saturdays, and all summer long. Even with his busy schedule, he never missed his boys sporting events, and was always there to support and cheer them on!

In 1993, Darrel and Trish began buying property in Atlantic Beach, N.C., and fell in love with the area. In 2002, they decided to “retire” there and bought the Caribbe Inn Motel, which they have successfully operated ever since.

To say that Darrel loved golf would be an understatement! Before retirement you could find him at Penn Oaks Golf Club, in West Chester, Pa., on Sunday playing golf with his brothers, his best friend, Ed Chelo, and eventually, his sons. When he moved to Atlantic Beach, he immediately joined Morehead City Country Club, and although he was busy running a motel, he managed to fit in a little golf.

Football season was Darrel’s favorite time of the year when he cheered on his beloved Philadelphia Eagles! He never missed a game and especially enjoyed the excitement of their Super Bowl victory in 2018!

Darrel is survived by his wife, Trish, his sons Michael (Sarah) and Patrick (Leah), his grandchildren, Maggie, Jonathan, Andrew, Ava, and Owen, his brother Ken (Molly), his sister, Jacqueline (Frank), and his best friend, Ed Chelo (Sue). He was preceded in death by his Mother and Father, his sister, Bernadette, and his brothers, Bud and Don.

His Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
