Lois Hodge (nee May)

-

(November 29, 1931 – March 29, 2024) Lois Hodge (nee May), age 92, passed away at Riddle Village, Media, PA.

Born in Shenandoah, PA, Lois was the daughter of the late Charles and Amelia May.

She was predeceased by her husband Elbert “Bert” Hodge.

She will be greatly missed by her sons John E. Hodge (Gail) of Havertown and Charles D. Hodge (Cynthia) of York, by her four granddaughters, Kathryn Driesbaugh (Jason) and Julia Harrison (Samuel) both of Havertown; Melissa Rittase (William) of Lansdale, and Heather Carlisle (Kieran) of Newark, DE; and by her 7 great granddaughters (Elizabeth, Amelia, Abigail, Lillian, Nora, Charlotte, and Maeve).

Graduating in 1949 from Shenandoah High School, Lois received her nursing degree from Philadelphia General Hospital (PGH). She worked as a floor nurse at PGH and Byberry Hospital; at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego, CA; at Shore Memorial Hospital, Somers Pt., NJ, and at numerous other hospitals in the Philadelphia Area. She was a school nurse in the Chester-Upland School District for more than 20 years. Until her death, she would run into former students and remember their stories.

In 1965 Lois, Bert and their family moved to Springfield, PA. She was involved for many years with the League of Women Voters of Delaware County and the alumni of PGH. When she retired, she served the Springfield Community by providing blood pressure screenings at the Township Building. She was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, where, as a member of the Reassurance Ministry, she called homebound members and friends of Covenant. She enjoyed going to the Philadelphia Orchestra, listening to opera broadcasts, and reading the newspaper. Friends and family often called her “Esther Williams” since she loved the water, whether at the Springfield Swim Club or on the beach at the Jersey Shore in the summer and in Naples, FL in the winter.

Lois will be remembered as a great friend, a rock to her family, and a strong example for her granddaughters and great granddaughters.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Service on April 13 at Covenant United Methodist Church, 212 West Springfield Rd., Springfield, PA 19064. Calling will be held from 9:30-11am with the service immediately following. Interment will be private.
