Dun­bar hosts Jef­fer­son in bat­tle of de­fend­ing state cham­pi­ons


It’ll be a bat­tle of de­fend­ing boys state bas­ket­ball cham­pi­ons when Dun­bar (5-1) hosts Jef­fer­son (4-0) in what prom­ises to be a red-hot non-league game to­day (7:30 p.m.).

The Wolver­ines most re­cently handed Cleve­land John Hay its first loss, 78-59. Af­ter the Bron­cos, the de­fend­ing state Di­vi­sion II champs will host peren­nial power Can­ton McKin­ley on Tues­day.

Jef­fer­son (4-0) has crushed its last three foes fol­low­ing an open­ing de­feat of Mid­dle­town Madi­son. Af­ter this the de­fend­ing state D-IV champs are off un­til Jan. 4.

Last sea­son Jef­fer­son edged Dun­bar 74-72 to break a twogame los­ing skid. That be­gan its cur­rent 14-game win­ning streak over two sea­sons. Hoover on dis­play

Un­less you fol­low the sum­mer AAU girls bas­ket­ball cir­cuit, Uni­ver­sity of Day­ton signee An­drea Hoover of Spring Val­ley is a rel­a­tive un­known be­cause most of the Stal­lions’ sched­ule is against non-OHSAA sanc­tioned teams.

But that changes to­day when Spring Val­ley is at Stivers (7 p.m.). That’s the first of four games for the Stal­lions against lo­cal OHSAA-af­fil­i­ated teams. On Dec. 28, Spring Val­ley will host Jef­fer­son and on Dec. 30, Spring Val­ley is at Dun­bar.

When it comes to girls high school bas­ket­ball or a BCS Na­tional Cham­pi­onship Game, well, it’s no con­test.

That’s why the start time of the Jan. 10 show­down be­tween vis­it­ing Fairborn and host Fair­mont at Trent Arena has been moved back to 6:30 p.m. (re­serves at 5 p.m.).

Fairborn (6-0) is the area’s top-ranked Di­vi­sion I team and de­feated vis­it­ing Cham­i­nade Juli­enne 62-49 Mon­day night. Its clos­est mar­gin of vic­tory is 13 points.

Fair­mont (8-0) is off un­til Jan. 5 when Cen­ter­ville vis­its.

The na­tional cham­pi­onship will fea­ture No. 1 Auburn (130) vs. No. 2 Ore­gon (12-0) at 8: 30 p.m. (ESPN) at the Uni­ver­sity of Phoenix Sta­dium in Glen­dale, Ariz. Ben­nett a fi­nal­ist

Cen­ter­ville H.S. two-way stand­out Michael Ben­nett is among six fi­nal­ists for the U.S. Army All-Amer­i­can Bowl An­thony Munoz Line­man of the Year award.

Ben­nett will play in the al­ls­tar foot­ball game on Satur­day, Jan. 8 at the San An­to­nio, Texas, Alam­od­ome.

Ben­nett signed to play with Ohio State Uni­ver­sity next sea­son.
