Dunbar hosts Jefferson in battle of defending state champions
It’ll be a battle of defending boys state basketball champions when Dunbar (5-1) hosts Jefferson (4-0) in what promises to be a red-hot non-league game today (7:30 p.m.).
The Wolverines most recently handed Cleveland John Hay its first loss, 78-59. After the Broncos, the defending state Division II champs will host perennial power Canton McKinley on Tuesday.
Jefferson (4-0) has crushed its last three foes following an opening defeat of Middletown Madison. After this the defending state D-IV champs are off until Jan. 4.
Last season Jefferson edged Dunbar 74-72 to break a twogame losing skid. That began its current 14-game winning streak over two seasons. Hoover on display
Unless you follow the summer AAU girls basketball circuit, University of Dayton signee Andrea Hoover of Spring Valley is a relative unknown because most of the Stallions’ schedule is against non-OHSAA sanctioned teams.
But that changes today when Spring Valley is at Stivers (7 p.m.). That’s the first of four games for the Stallions against local OHSAA-affiliated teams. On Dec. 28, Spring Valley will host Jefferson and on Dec. 30, Spring Valley is at Dunbar.
On Feb. 7 Spring Valley also is at Bethel. Girls game moved back
When it comes to girls high school basketball or a BCS National Championship Game, well, it’s no contest.
That’s why the start time of the Jan. 10 showdown between visiting Fairborn and host Fairmont at Trent Arena has been moved back to 6:30 p.m. (reserves at 5 p.m.).
Fairborn (6-0) is the area’s top-ranked Division I team and defeated visiting Chaminade Julienne 62-49 Monday night. Its closest margin of victory is 13 points.
Fairmont (8-0) is off until Jan. 5 when Centerville visits.
The national championship will feature No. 1 Auburn (130) vs. No. 2 Oregon (12-0) at 8: 30 p.m. (ESPN) at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. Bennett a finalist
