More on God and currency, global warming

-

‘Trust in God’ is only thing backing dollar

Re the letter “3 questions about ‘In God We Trust,’ ” May 22: Since June 5, 1933, when Franklin Delano Roosevelt took the United States off the gold standard, the monetary system in which our currency was backed by gold, the public’s trust in God is about the only thing currently backing the dollar.

Our founders’ belief that “divine intervention” keyed this nation’s very occurrence, prosperity and sovereignty, should be all anyone needs to understand why the words “In God We Trust” appear on our currency. We better all be trusting in continued “divine intervention” in keeping the wheels from coming off our great nation at the hands of man — monetarily or otherwise.

Why anyone would object to this phrase on our currency should be the true concern.

Oh, and as to the absence of those words on Social Security checks, it doesn’t need to be there because it will be on what you get handed back when you cash it.

Climate change is a scientific certainty

I believe in global warming and the harmful effects of carbon dioxide on our planet, and have for more than 40 years. I learned the theory of chemical reactions in the atmosphere that cause these effects when I was in graduate schools in the late ’60s at the University of Cincinnati and The Ohio State University pursing advanced degrees in environmental engineering.

The chemistry of global warming is very simple. Solar radiation, which includes UV, visible and infra-red (IR), enters the atmosphere and provides both heat and light to the earth. As a result, the earth heats up and radiates IR back into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide and methane absorb IR radiation, converting light energy into heat energy. As a result of these chemical reactions, the atmosphere increases in temperature.

I’ve been amazed and bewildered that a significant portion of our populace does not believe in climate change when a very high percentage of scientists believes the Earth is warming.

The primary argument against global warming is that it has occurred before

For the past week, in a series of stories titled,“Invisible Wound,” the Dayton Daily News has been highlighting the challenges that many military veterans are facing upon returning home from the battlefield.

The series began with a look at post-traumatic stress disorder as the “next epidemic” for veterans. It then delved into medical care for returning veterans and explored the hurdles some returning veterans experience when looking for jobs.

With the series concluded, we’d like to know what you think. Are we taking good enough care of our returning veterans? Are we spending enough on medical care and treatment?

Do we need to do more about veterans getting jobs when they return?

Help us keep the conversation going in letters to the editor, Speak Up and on our Facebook page. You can also send me email at kaldridge@coxohio.com and we have always recovered. The difference now is that almost seven billion people inhabit the Earth and the amount of fossil fuel combusted is growing.

Climate change is in the category of “scientific certainty.” The time for rational decisions and actions is now.

in respect for those who served and died for this great country, not the celebratory event of July 4th. On Monday, the sounds of fireworks, both local planned events and neighborhood noise, just felt irreverent. Is it just me or are we just marketing/cheapening another national event for those who just want to make a profit?
