Joe Terry’s DAYTON — teammates chased him down between second and third base, congratulating him on his walk-off single by pounding him on his helmet.

Terry could take the beating. He was the happiest guy in Fifth Third Field after delivering an 8-7 victory for the Dayton Dragons over South Bend on Thursday.

“Man, there ain’t nothing like that,” said Terry, a 30th-round pick in last year’s draft. “That’s the first time I ever did that.”

Kurtis Muller scored from second on Terry’s single in the ninth. Muller had tied the game with a single to center to score Juan Perez.

The Dragons trailed 75 entering the ninth, but Brandon Dailey’s double and Perez’s RBI single got the rally going. South Bend didn’t record an out in the final inning, and Dayton won its fourth straight home game.

It was the Dragons’ first walk-off victory since the second game of the season.

“We’re moving in the right direction,” manager Delino DeShields said. “It might not be as fast as we like, but I’ve got a good feeling. They’re starting to play a little bit.”

Sean Buckley continued his recent hot streak, going 3-for-4 to raise his average to .216. 4⅓ Thursday.

“He’s fine,” DeShields said. “He’s just got to reinvent himself. His stuff’s still good.”
