Fatal shooting not linked to drugs

Police now say a fatal shooting on Xenia Avenue early Friday morning was not related to drugs.

The victim, identified as 25-year-old Keith Van Moore of Dayton, was shot at least twice. Police initially said they believed the crime was drug related, but later said a disagreeme­nt may have turned violent.

Dayton police Sgt. Moises Perez said officers found Moore lying in the street near the intersecti­on of Xenia and George Street. Medics transporte­d him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

“Someone had heard approximat­ely two shots right about 5 o’clock in the morning,” said Perez. “They had maybe heard some yelling and they believed it was behind 353 Xenia Ave.”

Witnesses told News Center 7 Moore was with friends inside a home playing video games into the early morning hours, and the shooting occurred just after he left the home before 5 a.m.

Friends and family plan to hold a memorial for Moore at the intersecti­on of Xenia and George at 5 p.m. Sunday. police records.

Police said the couple heard a loud noise and went to check it out. The uninvited guest was standing just inside the back door, according to the report.

The suspect fled after the husband went after him and later the couple found two coats, valued at $250, lying in the yard that had been inside the residence, according to the report.

Police said the suspect was wearing a black hoodie, tan shorts and was described as in his 30s, standing 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing 140 pounds. The incident remains under investigat­ion.
