Moeller wins D-I title

COLUMBUS — Devon Poeppelman helped Minster High School escape with a 5-4 defeat of Cuyahoga Heights to win its second straight Division IV state baseball championsh­ip Saturday at Huntington Field.

With two outs and the score knotted at four, Poeppelman singled in Jay Eilerman for the walkoff win.

The Wildcats (26-6) got on the board in the first inning and added three more runs in the fifth for a 4-0 lead that they took into the seventh.

Cuyahoga Heights responded by scoring four runs to tie the game, setting the stage for Poeppelman’s heroics.

Minster pitcher Austin Knapke picked up the win in relief after Doug Huber started and held Cuyahoga Heights to one hit over five innings. Huber also went 2for-3 with two RBI.

Division I

Cin. Archbishop Moeller 9, Westlake 6: Moeller won its sixth state championsh­ip by scoring eight runs in the first three innings. The secondrank­ed Crusaders have won a title in each of the last five decades.

Ty Amann, Spencer Iacovone, and Riley Mahan each drove in two runs for Moeller (26-5).

Division II

Cols. St. Francis DeSales 3, Wapakoneta 2: Fourth-ranked De- Sales edged Wapakoneta to claim its second straight state championsh­ip.

The Stallions (26-6) scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning.

Division III

Wheelersbu­rg 1, Lima Central Catholic 0: Wheelersbu­rg freshman Wade Miller pitched his team to a title with a onehit shutout.

Miller did not allow a hit until a one-out triple in the seventh inning. The following batter grounded into a fielder’s choice, and the runner was thrown out at the plate.

Garrett Carmichael drove in the game’s only run in the fourth. Wheelersbu­rg (30-2) shut out 19 opponents this season.
