TRANSITION­S College freshmen offer insight

College offers many challenges and opportunit­ies for those leaving home and exploring life on their own for the first time. As this year’s high school seniors look forward, college freshmen reflect to offer advice for the new incoming class.

Advice you wish you had been given before starting college: “A lot of times when you come into college you are very nervous, and I wish I had been told to take things one day at a time.”

What you wish you had known before starting college: “Not to take early morning classes. I wish I had known that classes aren’t as hard as they might seem, but you need to put in a lot of work.”

College preparatio­n tips: “It helps to like to read because you will be reading a lot. Communicat­ion skills are important as you interact with adults.”

Tips for enjoying a new environmen­t: “Get to know people from all different walks of life. Take advantage of every opportunit­y you can. Get out and do things you think will be beneficial.”

Advice you wish you had been given before starting college: “I wish that people would have told me to get to know your professors as quickly as you can. A lot of times people don’t understand that a good relationsh­ip with your professor can be crucial to success.”

What you wish you had known before starting college: “I wish I had known how to study better. I certainly did not know how to study well in high school and coming here has been a big change.”
