— Imagine this, you LEBANON have friends visiting Ohio and they can only stop at one restaurant in the state. Out of the hundreds, if not thousands of choices, which do you choose as the iconic Buckeye eatery that will leave the best taste in their mouths?
Tough choice? Well, a Yahoo food writer, along with a nebulous staff of “they,” believes he’s made that choice.
In a list, inquisitively titled “Are These the Most Iconic Restaurants in Every State?” Lee Breslouer names The Golden Lamb in Lebanon as the state’s best place to pull up a seat.
The author says he used criteria, such as age of restaurant, popularity, visits, and cold calls to make his choice.
Honestly though, the historic eatery does have the chops to represent Ohio on most foodies’ list.
The first reason Breslouer cited for the restaurant’s status was, of course, its age. The Golden Lamb was opened in 1803 between Cincinnati and the old National Road, one of the country’s first major highways. Its location helped attract travelers since the place was both a hotel and restaurant. Some of those visitors included 12 presidents along side authors Mark Twain and Charles Dickens, Breslouer points out.
The Golden Lamb has maintained its draw for national politicians in the 21st century. GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney campaigned and dined at the restaurant in his bid against President Barack Obama during the last election cycle.
And what pushed The Golden Lamb to the very top of the list of iconic restaurants on a national list?
The food on the menu is good, the author writes.
And with a wink and a nod, Breslouer acknowledges lamb is still served there.
