Memorial park for school shooting victims in works

Nature path, new playground planned in Chardon.

— A committee CHARDON is working to raise funds and finalize design plans for a memorial park to honor the victims of a 2012 northeast Ohio school shooting.

Committee members presented the design this week to the Chardon School Board, The NewsHerald in Willoughby reported.

The memorial will honor the three students killed and several others injured during a shooting at Chardon High School on Feb. 27, 2012.

Committee members said they won’t set a constructi­on date for the park until they reach their funding goal of $300,000.

The committee has also teamed up with a local nonprofit for the project.

The memorial is expected to be constructe­d on park land near a district elementary school. Initial designs include an updated nature path, playground and outdoor fitness center.

Chardon School Board President Guy Wilson said he supports the memorial

Chardon High School senior and called it very appropriat­e.

Katie Kalis, a Chardon High School senior who sits on the committee, said she likes the living aspect of the proposed memorial.

“People can go there, reflect and have fun there with their families,” she said.

Twenty-year-old T.J. Lane pleaded guilty to the shootings and is serving three life sentences.
