Damage widespread after severe storms

Miami County barn was ripped apart by strong winds.

Roofs were torn off buildings, barns leveled and large trees felled Wednesday evening when a strong line of storms passed through the region.

Christmas Eve will be mild with temperatures today reaching the upper 50s. It will be breezy, but unlike the gusty winds during Wednesday night storms that brought heavy rains and led to tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings throughout the region.

In Miami County, sheriff’s Deputy Warren Edmondson said a funnel cloud was spotted in the air but didn’t appear to touch down. The storm did blow down trees, including one across Eldean Road west of Troy. Two cars drove over the trunk, including one that went airborne, after the drivers didn’t see it, Edmondson said. There were no injuries, but one vehicle broke an axle, and the second had a flat tire, the deputy said.

Also in Miami County, lumber was strewn all over after a barn was ripped apart by strong winds just west of Pleasant Hill.

There were several reports of trees that fell on houses, including one in Dayton that toppled, causing extensive damage to the front porch and roof of a Rubicon Street house.

“That rainstorm took down a pretty sizable tree in our yard,” homeowner Todd Spees said. “Looks like we’re going to have to replace the front porch and there’s been a bunch of roof damage. Fortunately, the tree missed the actual house ... looks like we’re going to have some water damage.”

In Darke County, the roof was blown off the Arcon Buildings facility on Ohio 49 near Arcanum, and in Champaign County, a tree fell onto a car in the 4500 block of Church Road in Concord Twp., sending the driver to a local hospital.

Despite reports of possible rotation, no tornado was confirmed, and county directors said officials would continue to survey damage today.
