Gun, drugs found in traffic stop

Dayton police for the second time in a week arrested a 25-year-old man on drug charges.

A gun stolen out of Clark County, as well as other weapons and drugs, were reportedly found in a vehicle after the driver failed to stop at a stop sign at Radio Road and Blackwood Avenue Monday afternoon.

Dayton police followed the vehicle to the Mount Crest Apartments before the driver and passenger ran from the car and tried to evade police, according to a police report.

Dlaquan Cantrell, a passenger in the vehicle, was tased by police before he would cooperate. The man’s twin brother, who was driving, got away on foot, police said.

Police observed in the vehicle two loaded handguns and capsules of suspected heroin. One of the guns was stolen out of Clark County.

Just the week before, Cantrell was arrested for possession of drugs during a traffic stop. In this latest traffic stop, police reportedly also found marijuana in Cantrell’s pockets.

He’s now in Montgomery County Jail on new charges of receiving stolen property; carrying a concealed weapon; having weapons while under disability; possession of drugs; obstructin­g official business; and resisting arrest.

Dayton Police Lt. Mark Ponichtera said a hostage negotiator convinced the suspect to turn himself in. Ponichtera said officers found weapons and body armor in the apartment and evidence will be presented to the prosecutor’s office.
