New year, fresh start

In the months ahead, make life what you hope for.

- By Barton Goldsmith

Back in summer, I started hearing people saying that 2016 has to be a better year than this one, and isn’t that always the hope? A fresh start, new beginnings, and a chance for a psychic do-over give us the ability to make the year more of what we want it to be.

Yes, it really is up to you. It’s not about your circumstances but about your attitude and being able to muster up the courage to face a world that may not have been so kind in years past. But the past matters only in how we can learn from it. Anyone at any time can change their situation by making positive efforts. It may take a little time, but it will not happen on its own.

I don’t know who invented New Year’s, but they did a good thing. In one moment your whole world can get a reboot (if you want it), and you can start moving toward your lifelong goals or change your area of focus and find ways to get more out of life. It’s your choice.

Yes, you can sit around New Year’s Eve bemoaning what has become of your once-beautiful life, or you can look for ways to make it different and even more beautiful.

I find that just making a list of what I want for the year ahead is a great goal-setting exercise and experience. This is less about making resolutions than about making improvements in the way you are feeling emotionally and boosting your skill set to deal with the outside world. Just daydreaming will get you nowhere, so you need to write down those goals and look at them every day. Doing this will help you reach them, because it becomes a constant reminder to your subconscious and helps you keep your focus and energy.

If you are in a relationship, another good tool for the new year is to do a verbal and written evaluation of your interactions as a couple. Start with the good ones and only list a couple of things that need improving at this time. You can also agree to have a 10-minute relationship evaluation once a week.

You can find a therapist to help with this, but doing it on your own, at least at first, can be very powerful (and less expensive).

If you want something more or different, perhaps even better than what you have right now, then get on the path to create the new you. The 2016 version of you could be someone you like much better and have more fun with. It all starts with your head and heart. Get them into the game, and you’re well on your way. Happy New Year! And Happy New You!
