Promising player ousted
Freshman Gibson cited for violation of code of conduct.
Ohio State got the first week of the season off on the wrong foot with the announcement Torrance Gibson was suspended by the university for the fall semester.
Gibson, a redshirt freshman receiver from Florida, is sidelined for an unspecified violation of the student code of conduct.
At his weekly pregame press conference, coach Urban Meyer said he did not agree with the school’s decision to punish Gibson.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Gibson signed as a four-star quarterback last year but moved to receiver to take advantage of his athleticism.
He has yet to make it onto the field for a real game but flashed his potential in the spring game in April.
Despite the high expectations, how much he was going to be relied upon was unknown. Meyer has more than a dozen highly recruited but mostly untested wideouts on a team that will start the season ranked in the top 10 of both major polls despite returning three starters on offense and three on defense.
Bag policy: Fans will not be allowed to bring bags or purses of any size into Ohio Stadium this season.
Ohio State’s bag policy allows “wallets and wristlets no larger than 5 inches by 8 inches by 1 inch.” According to the policy, all items and persons entering the stadium are subject to inspection.
Also, “Guests entering with medical or child care needs must enter through the Steinbrenner Band Center entrance (between Gates 10 and 12), or at the press entrance (between the Huntington Club and Gate 23) to have their items inspected.”
Lineup change: Fifthyear senior Tyler Durbin will start at kicker and handle kickoff duties Saturday when Ohio State opens the season at noon against Bowling Green at Ohio Stadium.
Durbin walked onto the team in the spring of 2015. This is his second season of competitive football. He played soccer for two seasons at James Madison. The returning starter, junior Sean Nuernberger, is dealing with an injury, Meyer said.
