The Wisconsin registered sex offender who pleaded guilty to raping the 8-yearold daughter of his girlfriend in a Butler Twp. hotel was sentenced to life in prison after a judge ruled he was a sexually violent predator.

Robert P. Maranger, 49, pleaded guilty in May 2016 to one count of rape of a child younger than 10 and one count of gross sexual imposition (GSI). As part of that plea prosecutors dropped the other six counts. The rape count included a maximum sentence of 15 years to life, while the GSI included a sentence from one to five years.

Montgomery County Common Pleas Court Judge Dennis Adkins later heard arguments during a bench trial about whether Maranger — a lifetime registered sex offender in Wisconsin — met the specifications to be classified as a sexually violent predator under Ohio law.

Adkins ruled Wednesday that Maranger did meet the criteria, meaning Maranger will spend life in prison without the possibility of parole. Adkins told Maranger that he had chance to look inside Maranger’s mind and what he saw was “pure evil.”

Maranger’s criminal history in Wisconsin dated back to 1991, including multiple prior convictions for sex offenses.

“This defendant has a lengthy history of committing multiple violent sex offenses, including against minor children. He received sex offender treatment many times in the past, which clearly has not been effective,” Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. said in a press release.

“His despicable conduct in Ohio and other states has negatively impacted the lives of his many victims. Accordingly, he will be incarcerated for the rest of his life. We hope that this sentence will allow his victims to have some closure and begin to heal.”

Maranger’s attorney Antony Abboud, said, “We are disappointed with the Court’s decision in finding Mr. Maranger guilty of the specification and intend on appealing his conviction.”

Prosecutors said on Aug. 7, 2015, Maranger was staying at the Quality Inn and Suites with his girlfriend and her daughter while in town to visit the Air Force Museum.

Investigators said the victim was assaulted in the indoor pool and the exercise room, and a clerk saw what was happening on a surveillance camera and called Butler Twp. police.

Maranger, of Stoughton, Wis., was arrested and later indicted one count of rape of a child younger than 10 years old and seven counts of GSI.
