Greene County candidates get certified for fall election

-

The November ballot for various races in Greene County is taking shape as candidates get certified to run for office.

Three dozen people will be vying for mayorships, council seats and school board posi- tions in Yellow Springs, Xenia and Beavercreek.

In Yellow Springs, there are three village council seats avail- able, but only one incumbent is running for re-election: Brian K. Housh.

Six newcomers have been certified to run for a Yellow Springs council seat: Jared Whit- taker, Chrissy Cruz, Taki Mano- lakos, David L. Turner, Kevin D. Stokes and Lisa D. Kreeger.

Long-time Yellow Springs Councilwoman Karen Win- trow is stepping down after serving for 12 years.

Councilman Gerald Simms is giving up his council seat and is one of four certified to run for the office of Yellow Springs mayor, the others being Cath- erine Price, Laura Curliss and Pam Conine. Simms said his decision to not run for re-election follows his personal beliefs about pubic office.

In Beavercreek, term lim- its have opened up three seats on City Council, but only two candidates’ petitions were cer- tified — Joanna L. Garcia and Bob Stone.

Beavercreek residents have until Aug. 28 to submit their name to the Greene County Board of Elections to be con- sidered as a write-in candidate.

Llyn McCoy, elections board director, said the ballot will show that there are three to elect to Beavercreek City Coun- cil, but only the certified candidates’ names will appear.

Under Beavercreek’s char- ter, any vacant council seats must be appointed by council and filled within 60 days. That appointment will serve until the next general election..

Only incumbents will be on the ballot for three seats on Beavercreek’s school board — Denny Morrison, Jo Ann Rig- ano and Krista Hunt — and on Xenia’s school board — Robert P. Dillaplain, Cheryl D. Marcus, Jennifer E. Marietta.

In Xenia, two City Coun- cil seats are up for grabs and eight people have been certified to run: Phillip Shaw, Billie Carrico, Dennis R. Propes, Carol R. Igess, Eric V.A. Winston, Wesley Smith, Levi P. Dean and Edward A. Council.

Xenia Mayor Marsha Bayless and Councilwoman Jeanne Mills have chosen not to run for re-election.

Councilwoman Sarah Mays is the only candidate running for Bayless’ office and Mays’ seat will become vacant after the election.
