GAMES OF NOTE BEYOND THE TOP 25
■ Mississippi State 35, BYU 10
Nick Fitzgerald had a hand in four TDs to lead Mississippi State (4-2), which returned to form offensively after a bye week and two straight blowout losses on the road to ranked opponents. Executing coach Dan Mullen’s balanced plan of attack, the Bulldogs had 306 rushing yards and Fitzgerald threw for 241 to cross the 500-yard mark in total offense for the third time this season.
BYU (1-6) intercepted two Fitzgerald passes in the end zone, both by Dayan Ghanwoloku, but could only convert one into points. The Cougars struggled offensively, finishing with 176 total yards and only eight first downs.
■ Florida State 17, Duke 10
Freshman Cam Akers ran 42 yards for the go-ahead TD with 8:23 to play, and Florida State held on. Akers finished with 115 yards, while James Blackman threw a 20-yard TD pass to Auden Tate on the opening drive for the Seminoles (2-3, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference).
Blackman finished 18 of 21 for 197 yards with two interceptions before he hit on a pair of long third-down completions to keep alive the drive that ended with the long score by his fellow freshman.
■ Boston College 45, Louisville 42
Colton Lichtenberg kicked a 27-yard field goal as time expired, pushing Boston College past Louisville in a shootout after the Cardinals tied the game late behind three fourth-quarter scores by Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson.
BC (3-4, 1-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) earned its first league victory. Freshman A.J. Dillon finished with a careerbest 272 yards on 39 carries, with four TDs.
Jackson, who had 512 combined yards, accounted for five TDs as Louisville outgained Boston College 625-555 but lost for the third time in five games.
■ South Carolina 15, Tennessee 9
Parker White made all three of his field-goal attempts, including a tiebreaking 21-yarder with 5:17 remaining, and South Carolina produced a goal-line stand in the closing seconds to seal the victory. Tennessee’s offense reached South Carolina’s 2-yard line with nine seconds left before Jarrett Guarantano threw three straight incompletions to close the game.
Tennessee (3-3, 0-3 SEC) hasn’t scored a TD in its past 10 quarters and settled for field goals after having first-andgoal on two separate drives in the first half.
