Kettering gives thanks to its corps of volunteers

-

Every November, Kettering Mayor Don Patterson, Kettering City Council and city administrators gather with volunteers at the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon where all volunteers are shown appreciation for their contribution of time and talent.

This year is no exception. Over the last year, 1,156 city volunteers donated 32,732 hours of service, saving Kettering taxpayers $783,931.00.

In 1979, Kettering was the first, in Ohio and nationwide, to formally initiate a volunteer program within city government. The program has been an integral part of the city’s operations and has saved the city more than $21.5 million. Kettering is recognized nationally as a leader in the field of government volunteer programs and has been a model for many cities throughout the country.

The Kettering community is fortunate to have countless volunteer groups and service organizations that demonstrate a clear commitment to the continual improvement of the city by supporting city events and programs. The Volunteer Partnership Award honors an outside organization, whether a business, a student group or service club, which has continually supported the city throughout the years.

The 2017 recipient of the Volunteer Partnership Award is Town & Country Shopping Center. Over the years Town & Country, led by Pam Cochran, has supported Kettering volunteer events and initiatives. They provide free books for children attending the Christmas Day at Polen Farm Open House. They offer supplies and in-kind services from their merchants to support projects. And they open up space to host volunteer service gatherings several times a year.

Volunteer action is a powerful source for addressing issues in all aspects of life within a community. By uniting in the spirit of giving, volunteers play an important role in strengthening the Kettering community and fostering a strong sense of community pride.

If you have some free time, why not consider joining the Kettering team of volunteers? Call the Volunteer Office at 296-2433 for additional information.
