Building a swimming pool requires dodging potential pitfalls

- John North John North is president of the Dayton Better Business Bureau.

Swimming is one of America’s favorite summertime activities. What’s a better way to go swimming than in your own backyard?

Home pools are a popular investment. However, installing a pool isn’t a simple process. A pool installation can take 6-10 weeks depending on the size of the pool and contractor. Not to mention the thousands of dollars a pool can cost depending on its style and size. The selection process can be difficult with so many building options.

With any project that involves hiring a contractor there are risks involved. Scammers frequent the contractor market and the pool installation business is no exception. A common pool installation scam involves the buyer paying up front for the pool and the contractor never returning to build the pool. Another common scam involves items being offered “on sale,” but then are suddenly unavailable, forcing the buyer into purchasing more expensive items. Be wary of salespeople who offer a reduced price because your pool will be used as a “model” or who pressure you into signing a contract quickly. These risks are easily avoidable if the right precautions are taken.

BBB offers these tips to help you have a smooth pool installation:

■ Decide on a shape, size and style beforehand

■ Set a budget and prepare for the investment. Pools have a high start-up cost, as well as the need for constant maintenance and cleaning.

■ Get recommendations from friends and family.

■ Make sure the contractor is licensed and insured as appropriate.

■ Get at least three or more bids and compare them sideby-side. Be sure each contractor includes: materials being used, quantity and quality of those materials, size of the pool and itemized cost.

■ Talk to your insurance agent to determine additional homeowner insurance coverage needed. Also, investigate possible property tax assessments.

■ Get everything in writing, take your time reviewing the contract and be sure to understand it. Your contract should include all details of construction, start and end dates, total cost, warranty/guarantee and payment schedule.

■ Avoid paying full amount upfront.

■ Ask your builder for pool safety information, how to use pool cleaning equipment and how to keep your pool water clean. Be sure to read it.
