Dogs attack veteran, her service animal

-

A veteran and her service dog are recovering after being attacked by two other dogs over Memorial Day weekend in Butler Twp.

Susan Getz — a veteran and former Dayton resident living in Florida — and her 3-yearold service dog, a toy poodle named Joshua, were attacked by the two other dogs during a visit to Dayton. While on a walk near the Extended Stay Hotel on Miller Lane, Getz said two Akitas attacked her and Joshua.

The two dogs caused puncture wounds to Getz’s service dog’s chest and legs. While trying to pull the dogs apart, Getz was bitten and bruised, she said.

“I thought he was dead,” she said. “When I finally picked him up, he was just limp. He wasn’t moving or doing anything, totally limp. He’s my life. He’s what keeps me alive.”

Joshua was taken to the Emergency Medical Hospital in Moraine to receive stitches in his hind left leg. He now has a hard time eating and walking, Getz said, and his right leg is the only thing helping to hold him up.

The attack to Joshua has cost around $2,000 in doctor bills. Getz said he is still bleeding occasionally and has another vet appointment soon.

Dayton police said they are familiar with the dogs, as they have attacked other animals in the past. They did not say if the owner would face charges related to the incident.

“Something needs to be done,” Getz said.
