Firm hired to appraise children’s home property

-

The Miami County commissioners May 31 hired a Springfield business to appraise the Children’s Home Farm property as they continue to work on deciding the property’s future.

Harvey Plus LLC/Harvey Auction Co. will be paid up to $2,000 to appraise the 171.75 acres at 291 S. Children’s Home Road in Elizabeth Twp. The property was donated to the county in 1877 by John K. and Jacob Knoop for use as a children’s home. The appraisal follows the recent survey of the land following the closing late last year of the David L. Brown Youth Center.

The commissioners this year said legal research confirmed the county as the legal owner of the property. The county children’s home closed in the 1970s, then was reopened by the state as the Western Ohio Youth Center in the 1980s. NANCY BOWMAN, CONTRIBUTING WRITER
