Woman dies after car flees traffic stop

A Dayton woman died early Saturday morning after a vehicle in which she was riding fled a traffic stop attempt and crashed into a utility pole.

Ebony Radford, 35, of Dayton was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Oakridge Drive in Dayton, the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office said.

The crash happened about 1:40 a.m. Saturday after an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper tried to initiate a traffic stop at Gettysburg Avenue and Oakridge Drive.

OSP Sgt. Matt Robin- son confirmed said the car failed to stop, turned right on Oakridge Drive, then lost control and crashed into an RTA pole after a 20-second pursuit. The rear end of the vehicle was split in half on impact.

Thurston Melson, 37, was driving the 2007 Dodge Magnum on Gettysburg Avenue near Oakridge Drive when the State Trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop, according to a release from OSP.

Melson was taken to Miami Valley Hospital and was listed in serious condition on Saturday.

Initial emergency scanner traffic of the event indicated the two people inside the vehicle had to be extracted because the doors will not open.

He was a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed golf, music and spending time with family and friends.

Charlie was kind-hearted, loving and considered a “nice man” by all. He will be deeply missed by his family and special friends. He also raced cars in the early days of Dayton Speedway. Darrell was comfortabl­e with all and was usually the liveliest one at any gathering, telling jokes and holding court. Darrell never met a card game that he didn’t like, and he shared his love of cards with all of his grandsons. He loved to spend time with his family and friends at his summer home in Indian Lake, playing cards, swinging on the porch and having fun. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandy in 2013.
