Eight nursing homes in the region that had been in bankruptcy proceedings are now owned by ProMedica, a Toledo-based health network.

HCR ManorCare, the second-largest nursing home owner in the U.S., operated nursing homes in the area under its Heartland brand.

Earlier this year, it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after falling behind on its rent for years.

The deal to sell HCR to ProMedica was finalized last week.

HCR had local nursing homes under the Heartland brand in Beavercreek, Centerville, Kettering, Greenville, Miamisburg, Piqua, Springfield and Fairfield.

Heartland Hospice Services, based in Kettering, also serves a 10-county area.

This news organization previously reported that ProMedica was planning to buy the nursing homes.

The complex deal involved changing the for-profit nursing homes to nonprofit entities.

The combined organization is now a $7 billion company with 70,000 employees in 30 states, boosting ProMedica to the 15th-largest health system in the United States by revenue.

The giant health care company now owns a hospital system, a physician group, several health insurance plans, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, rehab services, home health services and hospice.

Randy Oostra, president and CEO at ProMedica, said in a statement that the new company will “redefine health care.”

“We are focused on tearing down the walls between care delivery channels to provide simpler navigation across the care continuum, along with greater value,” Oostra said.
