Do what you love — or not

- Ron Rollins Ideas & Voices Editor

For a long time, parents, mentors and educators have been telling kids that as they decide what they want to do when they grow up, they should “find their passion.” But is that necessarily good advice?

A recent story at The Atlantic casts doubt, asking whether there is a much better, more constructive way to make career choices.

“A ... study done on adults’ views toward passions suggests that people who think passions are found tend to pick jobs that fit them well from the outset. They prioritize enjoyment over good pay. People who think passions are developed, meanwhile, prioritize other goals over immediate enjoyment at work, and they ‘grow to fit their vocations better over time,’ the authors of that study write.”
