Busy roadway ready to see improvement
Dangerous intersection in front of Nutter Center to be repaved.
Drivers can expect delays at one of the busiest and most-discussed intersections in Greene County as crews work to improve the ride.
Construction began Monday at the intersection of Colonel Glenn Highway and North Fairfield Road in Fairborn, just in front of the Nutter Center. Last year, the city responded to resident questions about the most dangerous intersections in Fairborn with data that showed more crashes happened at that intersection than any other from 2013-15.
The conditions of the streets have also become an issue.
“This year especially we’ve started getting a lot of complaints from drivers,” said Sean Sink, Streets & Sanitation Superintendent for the city of Fairborn.
The work includes repaving the area after drivers told the city the area caused a bumpy commute.
“It’s asphalt over concrete, and over time it has shoved forward, creating a significant rideability issue,” Sink said.
Aside from the work being done and the blocking of some road areas because of it, the stoplights could also cause driver delays. Work crews have changed the stoplights to a set schedule, not a schedule changed by traffic flow, which is its usual operation.
But officials say that once the work is done, a better flow schedule can be set up for the lights, which should improve traffic flow.
“Just bear with us,” Sink said. “You may experience some slightly-longer delay times on your turns, but other than that the project should give you a better ride and should handle the intersection a lot better once it’s completed.”
