Students go extra mile, earn college credits

- By Richard Gates Superintendent The writer of this article is superintendent of the Jefferson Township Local School District.

The Jefferson Township Local School District offers great opportunities to students. One example is our College Credit Plus Program, which is open to eligible 7-12 grade students, enabling them to earn an Associate’s Degree, a Bachelor’s Degree or an Industry Credentialed Certification, while still in high school.

Jefferson Township Local School District is in partnership with Sinclair Community College. Students can take college courses at the Jefferson Township University (located in the high school), on the Sinclair Community College campus or online. College credits can be transferred to any fouryear college. The entire Jefferson Township educational community can be proud of our program.

Since implementing College Credit Plus, the program has evolved greatly. The goal is to improve student achievement every year, and to continue the trend of students graduating from high school with credits toward a degree or obtaining a college degree.

In the 2017-18 school year, the following students earned their Associate’s degree: Rory Tigler (Liberal Arts Degree), Kennami Stewart (Science Degree), Maur’yana Woodruff (Liberal Arts Degree), Kristopher Benson (Liberal Arts Degree), D’Arrionna Calahan (Liberal Arts Degree), Alexis Banks (Liberal Arts Degree), and Chanelle Works (Liberal Arts Degree).

Additionally, during the 2013-14 school year, two seniors graduated with an Associate’s Degree. During the 2014-15 school year, three seniors earned an Industry Credentialed Certification and completed internships. During the 2015-16 school year, four seniors graduated with an Associate’s Degree.

During the 2016-17 school year, five students, three seniors and two juniors, graduated with an Associate’s Degree. During the 2017-18 school year, seven students — four seniors and three juniors — graduated with an Associate’s Degree. Also during 201718, seniors Victoria Fogel, Class of 2018 valedictorian, and Aliah Barker, Class of 2018 salutatorian, earned credits towards a Bachelor’s Degree at Wright State University.

In addition, Aric Richardson (eighth grade) is on track to graduate from high school with a Bachelor’s Degree in his senior year. During the 2017-18 school year, 57 percent of Jefferson Township seniors graduated with college credits.

As superintendent of the Jefferson Township Local School District, I wholeheartedly support the College Credit Plus Program. The beauty and benefit of the program is that there is no cost to our students and their families. All students are required to do is be prepared to learn, be prepared to be challenged, and embrace the life-changing opportunity that College Credit Plus can offer.
