Change can be challenging, but also rewarding, just ask Curt Rasnic Sr.

“When you’re doing something for 30 years, whether it’s a job or a game, it can be tough to change — mentally even more than physically,” Rasnic said. “But if you believe you’re doing something for the better, it’s worth it.”

The veteran bowler has changed up his game in recent years — shortening his approach and transitioning to a lighter ball. It has paid off as Rasnic was Curt Rasnic (Bowler of the Year), Jim Fausnight, Gary Schrader, Tim Hartley, Jeff Parks, Rick Starbuck and Dan Clark recently named Greater Dayton United States Bowling Congress Senior Bowler of the Year for a second consecutive season. Rasnic also earned the GDUSBC Men’s Bowler of the Year title twice — 2001 and 2006 — and this marks the 23rd time he has landed on one of the all-city teams.

Rasnic had a season to remember, tallying 11 perfect games and six 800 series. He and his son, Curtiss, won the city doubles title, and Rasnic finished in the top five in all events among the seniors and in the top 10 in the city all-events standings. He carried a 239 high average during the 2017-18 season.

“I had a great year, my best year since 1991,” he said. “I got on a roll and I got confident and confidence is especially important as you get older.”

At 54, he still gave the young guys a run for their money, finishing second in the men’s all-city standings with 62 points. Only Bowler of the Year Nick Bertke, with 75 points, edged him out. Curtiss, 28, also landed on the all-city team with 53 points.

After tallying close to 200 career honor scores — including 94 300 games — the competitive fires still burn bright.

“I still want to win, there’s no doubt about that,” he said.
