Amazon considers move into movie theaters

-

Not content with delivery of books, digital video services, groceries and much more, Amazon is eying a move into theaters, according to a report.

Amazon.com Inc. wants to acquire Landmark Theaters, according to Bloomberg news service.

Citing “people familiar with the situation,” Bloomberg reports that online retail giant Amazon is vying with other suitors to acquire the theater chain from Wagner/Cuban Cos.

The chain’s owners have been working with investment banker Stephens Inc. on a possible sale, Bloomberg said its sources told it. No final decisions appear to have been made, the service said.

Landmark as a chain is focused on independent and foreign films with more than 50 theaters in 27 markets, including high-profile locations in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Through its Amazon Prime video channel, Amazon is already in the business of making its own movies. “Manchester by the Sea,” which was nominated for Best Picture at the 2017 Academy Awards, was distributed by Amazon Studios.
