Freshman QB Martinez named Nebraska starter
True freshman Adrian Martinez was named Nebraska’s starting quarterback for the opener against Akron on Saturday. Martinez is No. 1 on the Cornhuskers’ depth chart released Sunday.
Martinez beat out redshirt freshman Tristan Gebbia in a close competition. He will be the first true freshman in program history to start an opener at quarterback.
Martinez was the prize of Scott Frost’s first recruiting class at Nebraska, signing with the Cornhuskers after decommitting from Tennessee. The player from Fresno, Calif., didn’t play his senior season in high school because of a shoulder injury. Considered a perfect fit for Frost’s up-tempo spread-option offense, Martinez threw for 2,500 yards and 25 touchdowns and ran for 1,400 yards and 14 TDs as a junior at Clovis West High.
Michigan: Wide receiver Tarik Black is out indefinitely with an injured right foot. Team spokesman Dave Ablauf said Black was hurt during practice Saturday and is still being evaluated. A timeframe for his return has not been determined.
The 14th-ranked Wolverines open the season Saturday at No. 12 Notre Dame.
Black had 11 receptions for 149 yards and a touchdown in three games last season before needing surgery on his left foot. If he is out for an extended period, it would be a setback because he has been one of Shea Patterson’s top receivers in practice, along with Donovan Peoples-Jones and Grant Perry.
