Top-ranked Chaminade Julienne and Coldwater joined Bellbrook as the No. 1 teams in their respective regions of the first Ohio High School Athletic Association computer football ratings released Tuesday.

The ratings made their debut after Week 4 games. The Associated Press announced its first high school state football polls last week.

CJ and Coldwater are 4-0 and No. 1 in the state football polls. CJ was rated No. 1 in Division III, Region 12 of the computer ratings, and Coldwater was tops in D-VI, Region 24.

Bellbrook (4-0) held a slight lead as the top-rated team in D-III, Region 11.

Five area teams were ranked second in the computer ratings:

■ Northmont (4-0) was second to Pickerington North in D-I, Region 3.

■ Troy (4-0) trailed only Kings in D-II, Region 8.

■ Surprising Carroll (4-0) was runner-up to CJ in D-III, Region 12. The Patriots were 1-9 last season.

■ Middletown Madison (4-0) was second to Portsmouth West in D-V, Region 20.

■ Fort Loramie (2-2) was No. 2 to Convoy Crestview in D-VII, Region 28.

Unlike the state football polls that are voted on weekly by statewide media, the football computer ratings are based on a numerical formula.

First-level computer points are earned for wins and second-level points for wins by a defeated opponent. A team’s divisional status also is part of the sliding-scale point value, with D-I generating the most points.

The top eight teams in the final computer ratings following Week 10 games qualify for the postseason and the top four earn firstround home games. The playoffs shift to neutral sites in Week 12 (region semifinals).

A shake-up of the computer ratings is assured, beginning this week. Carroll is at CJ in a Greater Catholic League Co-Ed North game. Other things of note:

■ Greater Western Ohio Conference members Northmont, Springfield (No. 4), Miamisburg (No. 6) and Fairmont (No. 7) all were among the top eight D-I, Region 3 teams. Wayne was No. 10, but will join that bunch should it beat visiting Northmont on Friday.

■ CJ and Carroll were joined by six other area teams among the top eight in D-III, Region 12: Fenwick (No. 3), Trotwood-Madison (No. 5), Alter (No. 6), and Butler (tied for No. 8).

■ Two-time defending D-VI state champ Marion Local (4-0) could do no better than No. 4 in D-VI, Region 24.

■ There are two games on Thursday. Bethel (3-1) is at Miami East (3-1) in what will play a big role in determining the Cross County Conference championship. Also, Belmont (0-4) plays Thurgood Marshall (0-4) at Dayton’s Welcome Stadium. Both games are at 7 p.m. Contact this reporter at 937-2252381 or email Marc.Pendleton@ coxinc.com.
