School sensory garden
On Monday at 6 p.m., Clearcreek Elementary will hold a grand opening ceremony for the sensory garden at the school. The event is free and open to the public.
The ceremony will begin with a statement from district Superintendent Dan Schroer, followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony involving representatives from the local Board of Education and Clearcreek Elementary.
Community members and visitors in attendance will then be invited to tour the garden and explore what it offers students. Exterior lighting will be on hand.
Teachers and students will answer questions and provide explanations on how each station in the garden works. Light snacks and refreshments will be made available.
The event will be from 6–8 p.m., at Clearcreek Elementary, 750 S. Main St.
Four staff members from the school began work on the garden last spring. It is to be used by students in preschool, kindergarten, and first grade. The garden is in the school courtyard.
A sensory garden is a self-contained garden environment that allows students and staff to enjoy a wide variety of sensory experiences, helping to stimulate each individual’s senses.
Sarah Wilguess, an occupational therapist, Tina Krukenberg, a first grade teacher, and Amy Parks and Dawn Williams, intervention specialists at the school, led the project, with the help from community volunteers and organizations.
