HUBER HEIGHTS SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT RESIGNS
Gunnell thanks staff, community after 35 years in the district.
Susan Gunnell is resigning as superintendent of Huber Heights City Schools effective July 31, ending a 35-year run in the district, the last seven years as superintendent.
Gunnell started at Huber Heights as a school psychologist intern and eventually worked as supervisor of special education, director of student services, assistant superintendent of operations, and finally superintendent.
She called it a privilege to serve Huber Heights schools since 198485, thanking staff, parents, community and school board members for their focus on students.
“I had an opportunity to be part of a great team. Nothing I do is me. Everything I do is having the right people around me for the skill sets I don’t have,” Gunnell said, emphasizing the work still to do this year. “I told (the staff ), we’ll have cookies and punch maybe in May. Until then, everybody back to work.”
Gunnell won the 2017 Buckeye Association of School Administrators Exemplary Educational Leadership Award. She joked that she studied more about mechanical systems than she ever dreamed while overseeing the district’s multi-year, under-budget school construction project, and was glad to see programs like music and art return recently for students after painful cuts years ago. She said she’s enjoyed seeing generations of families come through the district in her tenure.
The search for the next superintendent includes a public forum scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 27 in the Wayne High School cafeteria to seek residents’ input. A district timeline targets candidate interviews in February.
