Investigators trying to freeze accounts of fugitive former coach
Montgomery County Sheriff ’s detectives are working to use a money trail to track down a fugitive soccer coach.
Justin Smith has been seen in Kentucky and Tennessee since running out of the middle of his trial in a Montgomery County court on Halloween.
Detectives think he cashed in his state retirement after resigning from the Montgomery County Board of Developmental Disabilities in the summer. They believe Smith may be using that money to hide.
As a result, they’ve gone to court to get an order to freeze the account.
“Well, it’s going to be good for law enforcement because it’s going to be tougher for him to continue with his escape,” said Isaiah Keller, special investigations detective. “It’s going to be more difficult for him to stay in a hotel room, buy meals and move around on a day-today basis.”
Photos exclusively obtained by this news organization showed Justin Smith checking into a Lexington, Kentucky, hotel.
The first pictures that surfaced of Smith showed him checking into a Marriott hotel in Lexington the same night he left Dayton.
He was also seen walking out of a department store there and captured on surveillance inside. Detectives say Smith was seen a couple of times in Tennessee the following week, but has since gone underground.
