First big snow, then a spell of bitter cold
The 6.1 inches Dayton tallied Saturday was biggest one-day total since 2013.
Snowfall around the Dayton and Springfield areas broke records
last weekend and brought the most snow to fall in one day in more than five years.
More snow fell in Dayton on Saturday than on any Jan. 12 since weather records have been kept,
and the forecast shows frigid temperatures move in this weekend.
A total of 6.1 inches of snow was recorded in Dayton, breaking the previous record for Jan. 12 snowfall of 5.8 inches set in 1964. That’s still about half the snowfall for the most recorded in a single day — 12.2 inches set Jan. 26, 1978, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.
Around t he Miami Valley, Springfield received 7.9 inches of snow and Beavercreek recorded 8.4 inches, but the highest snowfall totals were in southern Ohio. In Butler County, Fairfield recorded 10 inches.
WHIO Meteorologist Jesse Maag said Saturday’s snow was the most Daytonians had seen fall on one day since 6.1 inches fell on Dec. 6, 2013.
“The forecast was accurate on location of highest snow totals and timing of the storm. We received slightly more snow than anticipated,” Maag said.
The snow led to slick roadways, and runways.
The Ohio Department of Trans- portation Tweeted Sunday that it had 1,196 crews on Ohio roadways.
Clark County was under a Level
1 snow emergency when two semitrailers crashed just after 9 p.m. Saturday on I-70 near Enon.
The collision caused a fuel leak, and state troopers, firefighters, medics and a hazmat crew responded to the fiery wreck.
Firefighters extinguished the flames, and the left lane was kept open while the other lanes were blocked for several hours to accommodate public safety crews cleaning up the scene.
The driver of one of the trucks was transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center with minor injuries, according to dispatch logs.
Another fiery crash involving a semitrailer was reported on I-70 West near Peters Pike and Dayton International Airport Access Road.
Slippery conditions forced authorities to temporarily close the ramp from I-70 East to I-75 North on Sunday.
The intersection at Paragon and Social Row roads in Washington Twp. was closed Sunday morning after a Centerville salt truck slid off Paragon and a private salt truck slid off Social Row.
An aircraft carrying more than 100 passengers that had landed near Cincinnati from Las Vegas slid off pavement Sunday morning, according to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport’s Twitter page.
The plane was not landing but taxiing from one area of the airport to another, according to a spokesperson. No passengers or employees were injured.
Maag said he expects an uneventful week in terms of weather, except for possible snow Friday night and some frigid temperatures moving in next weekend.
“We have another system moving in that could bring us more winter weather on Friday night through the morning hours on Sunday,” Maag said. “It’s way too far out into the future to talk snow totals or even speculate on whether it will be rain, snow or ice. After that system moves through, we’ll experience bitter cold temperatures on Sunday and Monday.”
