Dear Susan: kitchen or bathroom? Do family members take long showers? Do you leave the hose running outside longer than is needed? Here are some hints to help you cut your water bill:

■ Get the entire family involved in using less water.

■ Insist that all family members take shorter showers.

■ Use cold water when washing hands and clothing.

■ Run the dishwasher only when full, and do the same for washing-machine loads.

■ Turn off the water when brushing teeth and use a cup or glass to rinse. — Heloise

Making a great pot of coffee

Dear readers: If your family loves good coffee, there are many factors that contribute to a good cup of coffee, including, of course, the type and quality of coffee you like, and using the right amount and right grind for your coffeepot.

But here’s another important step you absolutely have to take: Keep the inside of your coffeepot really clean. Many people just give the pot a quick rinse with water after use. But over time this will cause oil from the coffee to build up, which will affect the taste. So clean the pot with hot, soapy water - at least every third or fourth use. — Heloise
