Survivor’s condition upgraded to ‘serious’
Murder-suicide by boyfriend took life of woman’s son.
The condition of the woman who survived the murder/suicide that claimed the life of her young son has been upgraded.
Di’eshia Patterson, who police believe was critically-wounded Feb. 1 by her boyfriend in the apartment they shared in Miami Twp., is now in serious condition, according to Kettering Medical Center.
Police have said they believe Patterson, 27, and her 6-year-old son, Carter Clemons, were shot by Jovonie L. McClendon Jr., shortly before he took his own life in a video that witnesses said they saw on Facebook Live.
The shootings occurred on Sagebrook Drive off Spring Valley Road between the Dayton Mall and Austin Landing.
A hospital spokeswoman said she could not provide any further details on the status of Patterson.
McClendon, a 33-year-old United States Army veteran who worked for the postal service, called Miami Twp. police about 11:30 that morning and told them he had just killed his girlfriend and her son, Miami Twp. Police Chief Ron Hess has said.
Police responded as the Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center received a series of calls with the last four callers telling authorities they were watching McClendon’s suicide on Facebook.
Police said after responding to the Sagebrook scene they did not hear any gunshots. Minutes later, they entered the apartment and found McClendon and the boy dead, and Patterson wounded, Hess said.
Both deaths were from gunshot wounds to the head with McClendon’s being self-inflicted, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.
