The good and bad of Facebook
Hmmm ... good or bad? Vox.com marked Facebook’s 15th anniversary by asking numerous experts to weigh in on what it called “a simple but complicated question: Has Facebook been a net positive or net negative for humanity?”
Noting that Facebook “has done a lot of good,” it also notes that Facebook “has had problems, too, and many of them serious. Facebook has changed the notion of privacy. It’s changed the way media businesses operate. It’s provided a platform for bullies and racists and liars. It has disrupted democratic systems and facilitated a global disinformation crisis.”
Vox reached out to thought leaders ranging from Steven Pinker and Malcolm Gladwell to Jonah Peretti, the co-founder of Buzzfeed. Most answers seemed to fall into: it has a lot of potential but isn’t living up to it, and mostly Facebook is a mixed bag that has as many bad as good aspects to it.
